Using A Learn To Speak German CD Or Mp3 For Fluency

By Adrian Fletcher

Can you learn to speak German using a CD or Mp3 ? Certainly you can learn the basics and see it as a stepping stone to further understanding of the language and eventual fluency. The major advantage of a German audio course is that it gives you freedom and flexibility in when and where you want to learn German. And for many people this is a major advantage over other types of courses. This article will cover some of these issues.

It may not come as a surprise to you that a German audio will teach you 2 of the core skills to learning any language, but these are possibly the most important. It will teach you how to speak and comprehend spoken German.

The other core skills, notably reading and writing, can really be learned later. Speaking to people and understanding them is the interesting and fun part about learning any language. You could use the analogy of opening up your latest shiny new gadget that comes with a 100 page operating manual. You will probably play around with it first and then refer to the manual once you need to know how to do more complex things. Learning to read and write in any language is the equivalent of reading the manual. And some people speak the language without ever opening the operating manual.

Listening to a German audio course as often as possible is the best way to get most out of it. Indeed, if you can direct any spare time to listening to the audio or some form of German audio then your language skills will come on. For instance, listening to German songs or radio is another option.

Many people like to listen to the Mp3 or CD in their car. They have a regular hour or so that they have to write off commuting to work or dropping off the kids each day. So using this time to multi-task is a good idea. However a balance has to be reached between concentrating on the course and keeping your eye on the road.

There will be times when you need to concentrate on the road and may have to tune out of the audio. This is not good for learning but the more you listen to the course the easier it will get. I would suggest you listen to German audio CD's in the car after you have listened to them a few times beforehand. In this way you will be able to tune in and out and still follow what is going on.

Another idea for using your German CD or Mp3 is to listen to it on the bus or train when going to work. All you need is a personal CD or Mp3 player and you don't have the worry of driving. However most audio courses require you to speak out aloud which may be off-putting for some people talking out aloud on a crowded public transport and you are bound to get some strange looks.

Some people also listen to German mp3 or CD's while doing exercise. So you could listen to it while jogging or at the gym. Again, depending on how much you have to speak out loud this could be a good solution or not.

Again, the main benefit of a German CD or Mp3 is that you can multi task but to get the most out of it you need to listen to it first with full concentration. After that you can listen to it in a multi tasking mode or even have it on in the background.

The one tip that you can apply to anything really, is to be consistent. In terms of a language try to hear and speak a bit of German each day. This consistent process will get you into a groove. As we are supposed to have innate abilities to learn language, time and consistency will be your greatest technique to becoming fluent in German.
